    i bought a signal generator a few years ago for like 150 bucks, does 0-10 vdc and 0-20 millamp signals, but most of the time i was able to get by with a 9v battery

    Kele sells one that will also do 4-20 ma. It's about the size of a pack of smokes. I've had mine for 15 years and it still works well, so I'd recommend it.
