err, climate change, whatever. ive been going to this beach town for about twenty years, and have owned a place on the back bay for six. I don't ever remember the salt water back bay freezing. here is a picture behind my house today. 26195937_913653692115980_95936946378160818_n.jpg

Salt water freezes at 28 degrees or so. But technically the salt water does not freeze it rejects the salt as it freezes. This is one of the reasons why the arctic ocean ice can be melted into fresh water.

So essentially the ice crystals push the salt crystals out of the way as they form the sheet of ice? What if the ice were to surround a pocket of salt water and continue to freeze? Salt pellet in the center of the ice ball?

Good question...not sure but think it more likely to end up as a layer of salt or a high concentration salt solution below the ice.

we actually see a lot of brines made with calcium and its the same principle. the water starts to freeze and gives up the salt making the rest of the solution a higher concentration. in the ocean, I am sure there is a layer of some nominal thickness just below the ice where the salt concentration is higher than the lower water.

this is why you don't just freeze, it turns to a slush as a part of the water freezes, then the rst has a lower freeze point due to the increase in concentration

Today was like a heat wave around here.

Hope we don't get too much more of that crazy weather.
