This is from swamps link describing what it's like viewing a total solar eclipse in it's path at 100% coverage.

    http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/close_enough.htm

I remember one of my childhood memories watching probally a total solar eclipse with a box on my head. Boring and anticlimactic. I called off work last year for this one so I could get my kids there for the real deal.

It was about 30-40 years ago, it got almost dark, it was dark brown, I watched them through a welding helmet, even though they said they weren't dark enough, didn't seem to bother my eyes

Probally weren't standing under the actual 100% coverage of a total solar eclipse then. They say you feel the temp drop and it gets so dark you can see planets and stars like a full moon night brightness.

How dark does it get for the big one? :headscratch:

I'm thinking about road tripping to the "line".

I remember 40 years +/- ago going outside from my summer job at the mall for an eclipse. Didn't seem like a big deal, but I still remember.

looks like you need to find clear weather and be in the 100% coverage path or you don't get the show. 99% don't cut it. Next one in the USA is in 2024 from TX to IL after that it's 2045

Better idea. Convince a friend to do it and hang out with him for a few days.

You don't need an eclipse to do that. You just need to drive to Ferguson.

My parents are in Lexington, SC which is directly center in the patch of the shadow. I was planning on heading there but the kids start school the next day and they have several school related functions on the 21st. We're very close to Charlotte, NC so we'll at least get to see .98 magnitude eclipse.
