So I'm planning to change my furnace out this summer. She's been a good girl, but she's 19 and is starting to show her age. She's a 99 Armstrong Ultra 93% 60k BTU. I'd like to remain around the same BTU's, but maybe move up to a 96%. I've heard Amana has a stainless steel heat exchanger, I've also heard decent things about Goodman. Part of me wants to go with Trane or Lennox just because of their reputation.

    Recommendations?
    Suggestions?
    Smart ass remarks?

    Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd go with Lennox, but that's because I have a van full of parts.:D

Do a load calc! Verify proper duct sizing!

Any furnace is only as good as the install.

My $.02 put in something that's easy to get parts for. And maybe lean on your employer for a decent price on whatever the big "B" sells.

Amana. Got some in my rentals, no issues if installed right.
Otherwise whatever is available locally with good parts and tech support.

That whole "only ass good as the install" thing is way overated.......made up by some robotool on channel 3. It's total bullshit. Some equipment is just plain junk.

ITS NOT THE BRAND ITS THE INSTALL

There is no junk. Just bad installs.

All the equipment is made the same. The only reason there are problems is because of a bad install

Absolutely! But even a piece of shit will work better if it's installed properly. I've seen, as I'm sure you have, many systems from many manufacturers fail prematurely due to a piss poor install. Duct too small, furnace oversized, improper venting. Etc, etc, etc. Even the best furnace becomes a steaming pile of shit when it's not done to manufacturers specs. I will agree to disagree with you that the comment is "total bullshit".

Since we’re on the subject, do you guys also think less than half the professional members on the other channel actually have a job in the hvac/r trade?

    I almost forgot

    You need to do a Manual S, and a Manual T, and a Manual U, and a Manual N, and a Manual O, and a Manual D

Agreed. But installed properly, it was a better piece of junk than if installed improperly. I too worked for a Lennox dealer and we made the mistake of installing a bunch of them. Once installation errors were corrected we had fewer problems with them.

I'm on the other channel but not in hvac not anymore. But had 34 years in residential and light comercial. I'm still active there. Been out of hvac about a year and a half.
And I too, believe some equipment is junk. And I believe a good install is important. I, would want good equipment and a good install. Every freaking detail doesn't have to be of photo opt quality.
