That's why new self contained units have R290

Because they can no longer use 134a in new equipment

I think the cut off is still down the road.
I believe the ones who changed already and who have actually pushed for the change to 290 is because it is more profitable. The coils are back to the physical size of R12 units and they cool well.

    EPA for new self-contained units.

Didn't find the 12 to 134 rule yet but haven't looked either

"Unacceptable in new Stand-Alone Medium-Temperature Units with a compressor capacity below 2,200 Btu/hour and not containing a flooded evaporator as of January 1, 2019.

Unacceptable in new Stand-Alone Medium-Temperature Units with a compressor capacity equal to or greater than 2,200 Btu/hour and Stand-Alone Medium-Temperature Units containing a flooded evaporator as of January 1, 2020."

    Yep the customer gets hosed.

If it was 1985 you could buy a new cooler with r12 and the cap tube would never plug, the compressor would last a long time, and the evaporator would never leak.

But no, it's 2017 and you pay a premium price and get some pos Turbo Air with a Samsung compressor that may die the first month, a cap tube that will plug, an evaporator that will start to leak when its four years old, and some person at the factory did a poor job brazing and one of the factory welds leaks so your new unit came flat out of gas.
